Answer the following questions in short ( 30 to 40 words)

Q1) Why had Framton Nuttle come to the “rural retreat”?
                        
Ans)  Framton Nuttle had a problem of nerve. Doctors had advised him to stay away from excitement and any short of violence. He was expecting that calm atmosphere of rural area might help him to overcome his problem of nervousness. He decided to meet people there and discuss his problem with them. This might help.

Q2)  Why had his sister given him letters of introduction to people living there?

Ans) Framton was going to the country side for the first time. He didn’t know anyone there. So, he needed some introduction or reference to meet people and discuss his problem of nerve with them. His sister lived in this rural area about four years ago. She knew many people there. That’s why she gave him letters of introduction to people living there.

Q3) What had happened in the Sappleton family as narrated by the niece?

Ans) According to niece, three years ago husband of Mrs. Sappleton and her two young brothers went for a day shooting. While crossing the moor they all engulfed in a bog. Their spaniel was also lost. Their bodies were never recovered. Mrs. Sappleton was expecting that they would come anytime through the open window. She was waiting for them and kept the window open.
Q4) What did Mrs. Sappleton say about the open window?
Ans) Mrs. Sappleton told that her husband and two young brothers were on a shooting at the marshes today and they would come anytime.  As usual, they would enter through that wide open window and spoil the carpet. She looked calm. But for Framton it was quite ghastly.
Q5) The horror on the girl’s face made Framton swing around in his seat. What did he see?
Ans) When Mrs. Sappleton exclaimed that her husband and brothers had come; Framton thought that it was her imagination. He was convinced with the story told by the girl. So he looked to the girl for her consent. But when he saw horror on the girl’s face, he became nervous and swing around in his seat towards the window.
                        He saw that Mr. Sappleton and his brother-in-laws were coming. Spaniel was also accompanying them.

Q6) Why did Framton rush out wildly?

Ans) Mrs. Sappleton’s niece had told him a tragic incident that had happened three years ago. Husband and two brothers of Mrs. Sappleton were killed in the marshes when they were on a day shooting. Framton was frightened on seeing them coming towards the window. He thought they must be ghosts and he rushed out wildly.

Q7) What was the girl’s explanation for his lightning exit?

Ans) Girl told that Mr. Framton rushed because of spaniel. He had a horror of dogs. He was once haunted into a cemetery by the pack of dogs somewhere on the banks of Ganges. He had to spend the whole night in a newly dug grave. It is enough for anyone to lose his nerve.
