Ans1) Lushkoff was a beggar. He did not have strength and will to work. He used to tell false stories to people to get their sympathy and money. Once he met with Sergei and tried his methods on him. Sergei caught his lie. But he gave him a work of chopping wood. Sergei’s cook Olga helped the beggar. Initially she scolded him. Soon she felt for him helped him by doing hard work and made him earn money. She changed him with her kind words and noble deeds. He left drinking. He realized that he was not a beggar always. He decided to mend his ways. He became a Notary. He always felt indebted to Olga.

But he never finds his card in time. This frustrated him many times. Once he locked his card in the bag and hen he tried to open the bag his finger stuck in it and it starting bleeding. All papers from the bag spread here and there. Other time when he planned to flight one lakh miles a year, he could accumulate only 212 air miles. When he was going to Australia he could not use his card as it has his name ‘W. Bryson’ and ticket was in the name of ‘B.Bryson’. Thus his dream remained unfulfilled.

Ans1) Author’s house caught fire. It spread so fast that it engulfed the whole house in no time. He and his mother rushed outside. Fire was out of control. His mother ran inside to bring the metal box that contained all the important documents. She knew the value of these documents. She left the box outside and rushed back into the house. She was looking for the photographs and letters of her husband. Actually author’s father had died and his photographs were very precious for them. In the process she also got injured, but she cared the least for her.

Q2) How did the author feel after he went to his new school after the fire tragedy in the house?
Ans2) One Sunday author’s house caught fire. He lost every thing. He was quite down and feeling insecure. Next day when he reached school, he was not properly dressed. Everyone gazed at him. He felt very embarrassed. But soon he realized that students had sympathy for him. Attitude of everyone had changed. His friends took him to the room where they had placed all necessary things like school items and clothes. They were much concern about the incident and wanted to help the author in every possible way. Now author was convinced that things were going to be okay. His friends helped him rebuild the house. He was feeling secure among them.

Johnsy’s companion Sue told him the real problem. A thought had occupied the mind that she would die if the last leaf of the creeper outside her window fell. In the night when weather was very stormy and rainy Behrman went to the tree and painted an artificial leaf. It looked so natural that Jhonsy thought that it was real. The leaf bore sustained the rough weather. It reinstalled the faith in Jhonsy. She regained the hope to live. Thus   Behrman saved her life. But he fell ill and died.

Ans1) The super cyclone hit the coast of the Orissa and the whole region was devastated. Villages were almost razed. At that time immediate needs of people were housing, food, shelter and emotional support. Prashant fulfilled them with utter courage and sensitivity. He understood the need of the hour and came forward to lead. He organized a group of youth and put pressure on merchant to give rice for victims. He mobilized the women to work for food for work programs. He tries to resettle the orphans and widows. He organized cricket matches for children. Thus at the young age of nineteen he showed all qualities of head and heart.

Q2) How did Prashant contribute to improve the condition of the shelter?
Ans2) The shelter was in very pathetic condition. There was a fear of spreading epidemic. Moreover people were depressed, hungry and wounded. Prashant tackled all these problems wisely. First of all he owned the responsibility of a leader. He organized a group of youths and elders that compelled merchant to part some rice. They collected wood, cooked rice and fed the people. Then he arranged a team of youth to clean all the surrounding of the shelter. They looked after the wounded. He persuaded women to look after the orphans. To bring people out of their grief he organized games and matches for the young. For the same reason he convinced women to work for food. He became the burning example of courage and compassion.

Q1) Give a brief character sketch of the happy prince?
Ans1) The prince always remain happy when he was alive; hence his courtiers called him ‘happy prince’. After his death a statue of him was erected at a central place. Statue was ornamented with gold and precious stones. His eyes were studded with sapphire. The statue could see the whole city and its misery. Rich people were enjoying lavish life. On the other hand poor people were suffering and starving. He was moved by seeing the pity condition of his subjects. With the help of a swallow he tried to help the people. He gave all his gold and precious stones to needy people. He sacrificed his eyes to help playwright and a match girl.  He was a kind hearted and loving prince.

Q2) Compare similarities between the swallow and the prince.
Ans2) The swallow and the prince both were kind hearted. They were moved deeply by the suffering of people. The prince wept to see the misery of the people. His tears fell on the swallow that was also moved to pity to see all this. He decided to help poor and part with his jewel, sapphires and gold. Swallow helped the prince by carrying all these things to needy people. Both found pleasure in helping others. Both did not hesitate in even sacrificing. Prince became blind in the effort of helping others. The swallow bears the cold and lives on crumbs.

Ans1) The beggar, Lushkoff, requested Sergei to have pity on him and give himsome money to feed himself. He told that had been a village school teacher for many years. Sergei had seen him earlier. When Lushkoff  found that his lie is caught, he had told that he was an expelled student. So Sergei became furious and threatened to call the police.

Q2) How did olga treat Lushkoff in the beginning? Why did she do this?
Ans2) Olga treated Lushkoff very harshly in the beginning. She rebuked him and called him drunkard. But finally she chopped the wood for him. She behaved like that only to set him on a right path.

Q3) Why was sergei a bit ashamed of treating Lushkoff harshly?
Ans3) Sergei felt a little ashamed because he had given physically hard work to a drunken sick man. Weather was also very cold. He thought that it was injustice.

Q4) How did Olga save Lushkoff?
Ans4) Olga knew that Lushkoff was too weak to do the work. She seemed harse and tough from the above, but she was kind inside. She chopped wood for him  This changed his  heart. He stopped drinking and became a nice man.
