Q1) Why does the conductor call Valli ‘madam’?

Ans1)   The conductor called Valli ‘madam’ because she was bold and was traveling alone. She needed no assistant from anyone. Salutation ‘madam’ suited her personality. Moreover conductor was a jolly fellow.

Q2)  why does Valli stand up on the seat? What does he see now?

Ans2) Valli arranged money and information about this journey with great difficulties. She wanted to see everything with her own eyes. So she stood on the seat to look outside. She saw that the bus was going along the bank of a canal. The road was very narrow. Beyond it were the palm trees, mountains, and field etc.

Q3) What does Valli tell the elderly man when he calls her a child?

Ans3) Valli was not happy when elderly man called child. She was very smart and mature girl. She did not want to be called herself a child. She told the man that there was no child. She had paid thirty paise like everyone else

Q4) Why did not Valli want to make friendship with the elderly woman?

Ans4) Valli did not like the elderly woman for her big holes in the ears. She was wearing very ugly earrings. She was asking very irrelevant questions to Valli. Moreover she was chewing the betel-nut. Its juice could fall at any moment. So Valli was avoiding her.

Q5) What did Valli see on her way that made her laugh?

 Ans5) A young cow came right in front of the running bus. The driver had to slow down the bus. He blew the horn very loudly. This frightened the cow even more and galloped faster. This made Valli laugh heartly.

Q6) Why does Valli refuse to look out of the window on her way back?

Ans6) When Valli was returning back she saw the young cow, that came in front of the bus while her way to city, lying dead by the roadside. The site was quite horrible. Valli became very sad lost all her enthusiasm and excitement. She was no more interested to look out of the window.
