Q1) Discuss about Santosh Yadav’s childhood and growing years from ‘Reach for the Top’.How she defy social customs since beginning?

Ans1) Santosh was born in affluent land owners’ family in a small village of Rewari district in Haryana. She wore shorts while the girls of the village wore traditional Indian dresses. Her parents were quite traditional and always followed prevailing custom. But she began to live on her own terms from the childhood. She refused to marry at early age. She decided to get proper education first. She got admission in Delhi school. Her parents were reluctant to send her. She threatened that she would earn by working part time. So by being a rebel she managed to choose her path and reach the top.

Q2) Describe Santosh’s journey from her local village school to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering.

Ans2) Santosh went to Jaipur for higher studies after finishing high school. She got admission in Maharani college. She got a room in Kasturba Hostel which faced the Aravalli hills. She used to see the villagers going up the hill and disappeared. This aroused her curiosity about the mountains. One day Santosh went near the hills. But that day no villager was there. She saw some climbers. They encouraged her to take to climbing. Slowly her interest in climbing rose. In the mean time she saved money and took admission in Nehru Institute of Mountaineering at Uttarkashi’s.
