S. Buck's short story "The Enemy" explores prejudice and its negative
effects on human relationships. The plot revolves around the meeting of a
Chinese doctor and an American soldier, who were initially strangers, during
the American war on Japan during WWII. Regardless of ethnicity, the Japanese
must remain loyal to his trade, saving the life of the injured enemy soldier.
However, this does not sit well with his fellow men, who regard him as
unfaithful to his country. The story depicts how the Japanese doctor, Sadao,
balances these two responsibilities while emphasizing the importance of
humanity above all else.
