The Last Lesson(Alphonse Daudet)

Short Answer type Questions

Q1. What was Franz expected to be prepared with for school that day?

Ans:  Franz was expected to be prepared with participles that day    because M. Hamel had said that he would ask question on participles. Franz did not know anything about participles.

Q2. What did Franz notice that was unusual about the school that day?
Ans: Normally, when school began, there was a huge activity, which could be heard out in the street. But that day, everything was quite still. It was as silent as Sunday morning.  Desks weren't opening or closing. His classmates had already taken up positions. Instead of striking the table, M. Hamel's large ruler was under his arm.

Q3. What had been put up on the bulletin-board?
Ans: For the past two years, the bulletin board had been the source of all bad news. From Berlin, an order had been issued to teach only German in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. This notice had been posted on the bulletin board by the Germans.

Q4. What changes did the order from Berlin cause in school that day?
Ans: M. Hamel had dressed in his best green coat, frilled shirt, and embroidered black silk cap. The entire school appeared strange and serious. The elderly village people sat quietly like the children on the back benches, which were always empty.

10th class-cbse english (NCERT BOOK- First flight)( Long answers) chapter- 11 (The Proposal)( Anton chekov)

The Proposal

Important questions for board examination.

Answer following questions in about 100 to 150 words.

Q) Lomov did not like natalya because of her quarrelsome nature. Then why did he want to marry her?

Ans)  Lomov and Chubukovs were neighbours for long period. They knew each other very well. They were familiar with each others habits, nature and behavior. Lomov did not like Natalya because of her quarrelsome nature. But he was ready to marry her because of many selfish reasons.

Firstly he thought that he was over aged. He was 35 years old and if he looked for an ideal girl or real love he wouldn't get married. secondly he was physically unsound. So he wanted to settle down as soon as possible. He also knew that Natalya was good for housekeeping work. This would help him in maintaining his large property. Moreover if he got married with  Natalya the property of two neighbors will be combined and Lomov would be the sole owner. He had materialistic nature and all these reasons pushed him to marry a girl Natalya whom he did not like.

Q) Natalya, her father and Lomov were ill tempered. They quarrelled on petty issues. What are the harms of anger? Suggest some ways to keep our cool in even the worst of the situations.

Ans) Natalya, her father and Lomov were short tempered. They had irritating nature. They quarrelled on petty issues.  Lomov and Natalya argued on Oxen Meadows ownership. Her father also got involved in the fight. After Sometime they quarrelled on the superiority of their dogs. Irritation and anger can’t do any good. Anger is always harmful. One must learn how to manage and control the anger.

Anger drains our energy. A mature person must ponder upon the things that lead him to anger. It might be some words, incidents, persons or situations that trigger our anger. We must also think of the reasons associated with these things that cause sprout of anger in us. We must work at this level. Meditation can help. Yet another method is autosuggestion. We can suggest or train our subconscious mind and prepare it to tackle our anger.

Maturity means avoiding the irrelevant petty issues and focusing on the important things only. Accepting our situation and faith in God will also help.

More questions for practice.

Q) Natalya and her father both accused Lomov of telling a lie regarding the Oxen-Meadows but when Natalya came to know that Lomov had come to propose her, she at once wanted him back. What traits of her character are revealed. Do you like her?
